ABOUT BENJAMIN

Benjamin Martin is a husband, father, son, and lifelong storyteller who has spent much of his life trying to understand the difference between what we fear and what is actually true.

Born and raised in Virginia, Ben grew up in a close-knit family and eventually joined his family's commercial construction business, a company with more than a century of history. He has spent his professional life building things, but becoming a father taught him that the most important things we build cannot be measured in blueprints or balance sheets. Ben's first experience with fatherhood brought many of his lifelong fears to the surface. Anxiety, illness, relationships, family history, and the pressure to become the father he wanted to be forced him to confront stories about himself that he had carried for years. He began writing The Stories We Tell Ourselves as a way to make sense of those experiences.

ABOUT BENJAMIN

For most of his life, Ben believed fear.

He believed he wasn't strong enough. That anxiety would define him. That he might never become the man, partner, or father he wanted to be. Then he became a father. And everything changed.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves is an honest memoir about anxiety, family, love, fatherhood, and the quiet process of becoming someone different from the person you once believed you were.

HEART OF THE
STORY

FEAR

For years, Ben believed the voice in his head. It told him he wasn't enough, that he wasn't strong enough, and that the things he feared might eventually become reality.

FATHERHOOD

Ben wasn't only worried about whether he could be a good father. He worried about what parts of his own struggles might follow his children. Would they inherit his anxiety?

HEALING

Healing wasn't a single moment for Ben. It was a collection of difficult decisions. Taking his mental health seriously. Facing old wounds. Accepting what he couldn't change.

LOVE

Love changed the direction of Ben's story. The love of a partner. The love of parents. The love that survives difficult seasons. And most importantly, the unconditional love between a father and his children.

| THE HEART BEHIND THE STORY |

They Are the Reason.

Fatherhood changed the questions Ben was asking himself.

He started thinking less about becoming the perfect father and more about becoming the kind of father his children could always count on. The bedtime stories. The sleepless nights. The arguments over brushing their teeth. The hugs. The ordinary Tuesdays.

Moments that seem small while you're living them can become the memories that last a lifetime. Ben wrote this book because he hopes that when his children look back one day, they won't remember a perfect father. They'll remember a father who showed up. A father who listened. A father who kept growing. A father who loved them.
